The Animals....
We are definitely a pet-friendly family..
Puppy Suki, our English cocker spaniel, is about six months old, and has entered what we hope is the "chewing phase"... in the past few weeks, she has chewed up and partially digested an electrical cord, several magazines, several shoes, a wicker basket, pork rib bones, several pairs of underwear (her favorite!!), the leg of our kitchen table and countless rolls of toilet paper. We have learned the hard way that our house is not puppy-proof, and are working towards correcting that. As well, the toilet training is just not sticking... maybe its because she is too busy chewing to focus on this other area... or maybe its because she has the runs from eating such dumb stuff... In the meantime, I can report that she is not a total idiot... she can sit, lay down, roll over, stay (for at least 5 seconds), wait for a treat, come when called (as long as you say it with your "happy" voice), dance, flip and pretend she is a cat. She also is in league with our cat Houdini... who thinks that he is a dog.
Houdini... is now about one year old... loves his best friend Suki... they enjoy playing hide and seek, tag and wrestling together. As well, they seem to have reached an agreement on maximizing their skills. For example, I have witnessed Houdini using his climbing and jumping on top of furniture abilities to get whatever Suki wants. ie. my hat from the table, those pork ribs that were on the stove...and that baggie of dog biscuits on my desk. As well, I observed Houdini catching and injuring a bird in our back yard, and then teaching Baby Suki to chase the fluttering bird and catch it, all while proud Mama Houdini watches. It really is an incredible relationship that they have.
We also currently have two fish tanks, one in the living room and one in my son's room. We have had many rodents and birds in this house. They died. We have given up on rodents and birds. Permanently.
