Visiting the Trading Post
Yesterday, we went to the Trading Post at the Canadian Museum of Nature, located here in Ottawa, Canada'a Capital. This museum has always offered fantastic programming for children of all ages, and now is renovating so as to offer a more updated space. They have a dinosaur collection, sections on plants, rocks, animals and lots more.
The building is amazing, it looks like a castle. Apparently it was built in the early 1900's to mirror our Parliament buildings and in fact was used as our House of Commons for a number of years after a fire in 1918 burned down much of our original Parliament buildings.
At the Trading Post, each child is allowed to trade in up to 5 items. There are a few basic rules, such as the items must be from nature (Owen thought he could trade in a glass starfish he has), and you can't trade in more than two of the same thing at one time. You get two points for each item, with bonus points being available if the specimen is particularly good, or you know what it is or where it came from.
Owen traded in: one polished piece of shale, a shell from a scallop, a snail shell, and a tesselated cone (shell). Also, he successfully traded two "crystals" which he thought might be diamonds, but they turned out to be Halite (or salt)! Hey he got 4 points for this!
Once he had his credits, he chose two items to bring home from their collection. He picked out a large piece of mica (about 3 x 3 inches) and a medium sized garter snake skin, which is very delicate.
It was so much fun... I hope we do it regularly.

Girls Night...
OK...so we like watching this show. Sarah brought home some Mudslides and Cinnabons...and invited Dorothy, Zoe and I to join her for an evening of What Not To Wear. My girls love teasing me and saying I would be a great candidate for that show... I have never been a fashion guru... and I love to be comfortable. Plus I don't have money to spend on really nice clothes. Anyway, it was nice to relax with the girls.

Bell Sympatico Needs a Wake-Up Call
My friend Tamara sent me a note about this recent ad by Bell Sympatico (a Canadian Internet Provider) whose newest ad campaign that uses the slogan:
"You'll do anything to protect your kids from inappropriate content. So will we."
They have used a picture which includes what appears to be an elementary school health/science textbook on a school desk in a classroom. The book is opened to a page with the caption "The Female Body" and it looks like the breasts and genital areas have been erased or cut out. This ad has caused an uproar across Canada from concerned parents, women's groups and teachers.
Sue Richards over at the Breast Blog has written some interesting stuff about the ad and the protests to it.
As a sex educator, I want to ad my comment. I cannot believe that anyone would think it is innapropriate to teach kids about their own sexuality. We are working so hard to give children and youth the message that their bodies are are "normal" and that wanting to know about their bodies is healthy. Most parents want their kids to know this stuff so they can lead healthy lives.
Maybe the execs at Bell Sympatico thought this ad was funny? Well it's not and I have no plans to ever use their service.

Homeschooling Activities
We decided not to do swimming this term, prefering to wait until spring. Jack has caught up to Owen and will probably get ahead of him, but Owen can catch up later on. I am just not mistress of my own time these days and have to be patient until I am finished my articling.
Last Friday, we went to the Museum of Nature, located in this, Canada's capital. They have a really neat program called the Trading Post, where kids can bring in items from nature such as rocks, shells and bones and trade them in for "credit" in the form of points.
They can then trade for other items they don't have or build up their points in order to be able to "buy" the bigger point items, such as a big shark tooth or small skull for 100 points. While all of this trading is going on, the naturalists teach the kids how to identify their finds and encourage them to keep the better specimens they have for their own collections.
Owen is very excited about participating in this program, and last night we organized some stuff he can trade in when we go in, hopefully this Saturday.

A New Arrival...
Another Long Day of OWL
This morning when we tried to get our group to wash each other's feet and do foot massage... they refused...and so ended up just doing hand massages. I found it interesting to see that it was mainly the boys who were refusing... maybe they were nervous that their feet smelled bad?
Our workshop on consent went well, as did the one on abusive relationships. One of the highlights tonite was a feast of fruit with chocolate fondue after all of the workshops were done. Tonight the kids are having a coffee house and dance.. and are unlikely to get much sleep.
I am glad I came home to sleep! (but Eric has gone to do overnight supervision)

touching base...
Tonite it started... and I led a workshop on STDs (using m & m's ) to represent the various stds that exist... then we split into subgroups and my teaching partner john and I led a workshop on gender roles.. it was a lot of fun! I just got home and have to get up early tomorrow for a full day and evening of workshops... tomorrow we are doing sexual response cycles, consent, power in relationships, date rape, disabilities, contraceptives... (I think thats it)... it will be a full day... we got a pretty nice group of kids who I am looking forward to getting to know better.
The visits to my friends house to look after the dogs are going better, and dorothy did the visit tonight... and probably will do tomorrow nite too. The dogs seem to like her.
Jonathan will come back tomorrow to finish the wiring for the new bedroom. Hopefully Eric will start the sanding... we still have to do another coat of drywall "mud" (plaster)... then more sanding... then primer then paint... it is taking a huge amount of time, and meanwhile my dad has been staying at my brother's place...
I am tired. Good night!

Zoe brings home first high school report card!
(This is my big bragging chance, ok?)
Course --- Mid term --- Final
English --- 83 --- 87
Art --- 80 --- 91
Drama --- 77 --- 92
Math --- 89 --- 92
Zoe thinks she deserves treats, rewards and an exemption from any hard labour (like doing dishes) which might interfere with the development of her supreme brain power.
We are so proud! And also, she has friends.

Breastfeeding in Public
Andrea over at Atypical Life had this link, which shows the President of Venezuela talking to flood victims. I think it is wonderful that a culture could be so comfortable with breastfeeding. If only North America was like this.
For those of you who don't know Canada very well... we have ten provinces and two territories... I live in the capital city, Ottawa, which is on the bottom of the right side, north of New York...
I have travelled in Canada to British Columbia (including Vancouver, Victoria and parts of Vancouver Island), as well as Winnipeg, Prince Edward Island and have driven through New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Having grown up in Montreal, and now that I live in Ottawa, I am across the river from Gatineau, (which is in Quebec) I have been in Quebec many times.
As a child, I visited my grandparents in Florida, who were living there at the time. We had driven down, so I had a chance to see the Blue Ridge Mountains and parts of Georgia and the Carolinas. As an adult I have had a chance to visit New York City, as well as Bangor, Maine, Burlington, Vermont, and parts of New Hampshire and New York state.
Now, my sister has married an American who lives in California near San Francisco, and I hope to visit them some day. As well, my aunt (who is my age) lives in Colorado, having married an American as well.
Have you been to Canada? What other places have you travelled to?
Housesitting...
Poor Kirby, the dalmation, is pretty upset. He is ten years old and has never been without his owner or his daughter (my friend). He is hiding in his owner's room, on the bed, barking and howling..... He also has recently been diagnosed with a degenerative disease so he has trouble walking -- his hind legs don't work too well.
We are supposed to be sleeping here...but we will have to see how it goes. If Kirby doesn't stop barking, we won't be able to get any sleep. Anouk (the lab) is pretty happy to have company, and she is playing with Suki... (they are friends).
travelling in huge storm not a bright idea...

Valentines Day Sucks...
You will have to use your imagination...
1. Amelia - created 3 sock puppets which represented the ID, Ego and Super Ego (I assume she is taking some kind of psychology course???)
2. Zoe - created a model of a plant cell that involved: a clear, square glass cake pan, yellow jellow, a pineapple slice dipped in chocolate (so that there was an outer "skin" on it) and a cherry inside the hole... several green peas, cooked spaghetti, a kumquat, a cucumber peeled and sliced vertically, several snow peas and some bean sprouts... each fruit/veggie represented some part of the cell. (It looked really cool)
It's all about the pants...
The main reason Owen did not go to school is that I forgot to wash his pants. The black ones that he loves. He informed me last night that his favorite pants were dirty at bed time. I said, yes, I can wash them... but then forgot because I fell asleep on his bed with him.
This morning, when Owen discovered that the holy pants were not clean, had a meltdown. I found him THREE other pairs of pants that he could choose from... but no, they were inferior pants... one was too tight... one has a zipper, which he HATES... and the other looked like the pants that the mean boy in his class wears... so of course, he couldn't wear THOSE pants.
And I am just so mean, I expected him to choose from the pit of evil pants from which no good can come. I actually had the nerve to expect him to try on each of these stinky no-good pants. Meanwhile, Zoe and Amelia had been promised a ride to school to help them deliver their school projects... so the clock was ticking and Owen was not wearing any pants.
So, I said "FINE" if you don't put some pants on, you don't get to go to school today -- and it's VALENTINES DAY (in case you forgot)... and I left with the girls to get them over to the school (where they would be promptly kicked out because of the aforementioned fire ~see below). Of course, this ploy didn't work, and he said "no problem... I am staying home".
After I dropped off the girls... I felt bad... so I came back and saw Owen. We decided to go get breakfast elsewhere and spent an hour talking. (Oh yeah... he had put on some pants by this time). After breakfast, we went home, and I started feeling lousy, so I lay down and fell asleep. I woke up at noon. So neither of us went anywhere. It was that kind of day.
Construction Project: Part Three
Jonathan finished almost all of the electrical so there are lots of sockets now in the new room. He just has to do the wall switch and re-wiring the ceiling light.
We all learned how to do "mudding" and "taping" of the drywall tonite - and I learned that it is much easier and more fun to do it with my bare hands rather than the spatula thingies you use normally.
Overall great fun was had by all and although it was very messy, alot got finished... We will not work on it again until Thursday... I now have to start thinking about paint colours....???
School Fires
Zoe was upset because she couldn't take her schoolwork (including a project she had worked on) and because it was FREEZING (ie. -15) outside and they didn't have their jackets. Apparently they herded many of the over 1000 students into a neighbourhood community centre... Zoe was able to call her dad, and he came to get her.
This brought back memories of last winter, when my son's school was set on fire. In that case, we were contacted and told that the school was closed (on a Friday) because of a fire during the night. On the news that night, they showed pictures of the classroom which was burned to the ground. I thought I recognized something about the room, and I was right, it was my son's grade one class!
The staff handled it very well - they all came in over the weekend and set up a new class, each donating stuff for them. The poor kids were very upset, but the principal called each family and told them not to worry... and he gave them each a helium balloon when they came back on the Monday.
These poor six year olds lost everything they had left behind that day - shoes, lunch boxes, school work, and the teacher lost everything too. I can't understand why anyone would set fire to a school...except maybe so they could miss a day??

Happy Valentine's Day!

Construction Project: Day Two
We still have a long way to go to finish... including the finishing of the walls and eventually the painting. But overall, it looks really great - the bedroom is not huge, but pretty decent with a huge double closet and a window.
Jonathan with the air-powered nail gun. Use this tool with great caution... This is where the door to the new bedroom will be.
Sarah...pushing my buttons
If I ask her to pick up the dirty dishes in the living room (which she left there), she starts on a tirade about how Amelia has left dirty dishes in the rec room. If I ask her to help with something, she makes up excuses why she can't. I think she basically doesn't want to cooperate with me -- so I approach her in a defensive manner right from the start.
I know it is not ok to yell at your kids (or anyone else for that matter). So I am sorry afterwards and will apologize. But that isn't good enough. I need to figure out a strategy to deal with her in a more positive way. I need to think about it a bit... it would be helpful if I was away on holiday somewhere!!!
Valentines Preparations
Yesterday, Dorothy was looking for something else that was missing and checked Suki's crate (as she has been known to take things in there to chew them up) and found Owen's chewed up valentines. Actually, I was proud that Owen didn't totally freak out... he handled it very maturely and thought it was even a bit funny...
Tonight, we bought over 100 valentine chocolate hearts for Owen to take to school on Monday because at his school, they celebrate 100 Day (the 100th day at school each year) and it happens to fall on Valentines Day this year....
BTW... guess where we found Sarah's glasses that had been missing for a few days???

Construction Project - Part One
What got done today:
- building two walls.
- put lots of insulation into the walls (for soundproofing).
-wiring, including electrical, phone and cable
- drywall on about half of the two walls
- tried to put the door in - didn't quite finish as there were problems.
Still to get done:
- finish insulation and drywall
- finish door
- mudding and taping the drywall
- sanding, primer
- painting (probably won't get done for quite a while)
- electrical for lights in ceiling (with wall switch)
- staining door
- sorting out the various cable lines
What a huge job! A big thank you to the whole team!
This is how is was when we moved in... lots of wires to sort out... and we are adding the blue and white ones that are hanging down - they are for power and cable tv....
This is the electrical panel and the many wires we are having to thread from the back corner of the house, through the game room, through Amelia's room, through the laundry room, and through the ceiling into the new bedrooom.
This is a shot from the new smaller rec room, which will have a bit of an alcove when you come into the room.
This is a shot from outside the new bedroom... I am standing at the bottom of the stairs - to the right is the doorway to the new bedroom.
Eric is holding up the second wall from the other side (the side where the smaller rec room will be)
The frame for the first wall has gone up... it is between the two pillars... weird eh? You will see it all makes sense eventually.... Jonathan and Zoe are measuring the first board for the second wall. They are doing math!
